24k Gold Banknote Review - Is it Real or a Scam

Okay so lets get right to it, 24k Gold banknotes are selling all over the internet for about $3-$5 U.S. The question is are they real?? And are they worth it??

When I was roaming around Ebay I found these 24k Gold Banknote auctions, I also found them on Listia.  The banknotes come in different denominations that resemble U.S. currency. They looked cool all shiny like a 'Golden Ticket' from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. As I like things that are cute and more importantly.. shiny, I decided to bid on a couple of these auctions figuring they'd be a cute and cheap Christmas stocking stuffer. Well I was surprised at how high the bidding on these items was going. Okay maybe $3 bucks was fair, that works out to $1 for the bill and $2 for shipping. But some of these auctions were rocketing out of control, one reaching $9 for a single bill. WHAT!!??

After some persistence, and bidding on every single banknote auction everyday for a week. I finally won a 10 dollar banknote for $1.93 cents w/ free shipping. Still a bit high for my taste (I'm pretty cheap), but OK I got one now. When it arrived it came with a small sheet of paper claiming to be a certificate of authenticity. It even claimed to have a  unique 4 digit serial number that was supposedly assigned to the banknote & that the banknote is legal tender. I haven't been able to find that elusive number anywhere on the banknote though, and I can state as fact this is NOT legal U.S. tender. Meaning you CAN'T spend it... no matter whats written on that little "Certificate of Authenticity".

In the auction item description it was made very clear that the banknote was made of pressed gold leaf, then because of its ultra thin and brittle nature had to be heat pressed to some kind of plastic coating. And as I hold this in my hand and look closely at it, I can't say that they lied or really mislead me. The auction description was pretty straight forward, except for one word that I just can't let go of... investment. Is this a viable investment??????

The banknote itself looks very nice, and as a novelty item I would reluctantly pay a few bucks for it. However its the main claim to fame that has me concerned, it claims to be a 24k .999  pure gold investment.
Now don't get my wrong, the banknote is very attractive. The pressed images on both sides are very nice and reminiscent of the gold plated First Day Issue stamps of the 80's or 90's... which then sold for much more than they were worth and can now be bought for about $1 each. Now I'm going to accept the word of the seller that this is 24k gold leaf. But even IF that is true, then how much are these worth really.

Lets do some math... Lets say current gold price is $1400 per ounce 24k gold. Now in the title of several auctions it claims these are 5.5 grams. But my guess is that's total weight which includes the flexible plastic outer shell. So to make this easy lets say the pressed gold bill is exactly 1 gram. There are approximately 28 grams in an ounce. And if current gold price is 1400, that makes each gram worth around $50. Now correct my math if its wrong, it was my worst subject in school. But to me, I don't see how anyone in there right mind would auction off a gold banknote worth $50 for at tops $9 each... do you? So lets cut it down some more, even if the gold bill were 1/4 of a gram it would still be worth $12. Its just not likely that these have that much gold in them

Okay lets forget gold content for a minute and do some common sense profit analyses. Professional meaning full time Ebay auctioneers sell for a profit, not a loss. And although they may occasionally accept a loss on an item, they would never accept a loss on items consistently cause they would go broke. So lets say the average 24k banknote selling price is $2.50. Most of the auctions I've seen are free shipping, which is about $1.69 minimum if they use 1st Class Pkg for tracking purposes, paid by the seller. So that means they sold you the actual banknote for about 80 cents. Oh and there's seller Ebay & PayPal fees, around 10% so we're down to about 75 cents to the seller. Now the seller needs a profit, and most don't settle for less than 80% profit, which means they likely bought that bill  for about .25 cents. Now of course they likely bought in bulk, and were required to spend several hundred dollars for several thousand bills, basic commerce. Oh and don't forget the supplier, he had to make a profit too, which means the actual banknote was probably only worth about 5 cents to start.

My point with all this is, if there is 24k gold in these banknotes, which I choose to believe there is. The amount is so minor that the envelope you received the bill in is probably worth 10x more than the gold in the banknote. That's not to say this is a rip off, I'm just pointing out that this IS NOT an INVESTMENT.

If you think this is a nice looking bill, and you like collecting things that are shiny and new, then go for it. I did, and I'm not disappointed. Just go into this knowing that these banknotes are novelties, something fun to have hanging in a frame or given to a  friend or family member as a cute collectible. I may buy a couple more to use as a stocking stuffer, but I won't pay more than a few bucks each.

Now if I'm wrong about any of this, and you can PROVE to me that these are a good GOLD investment & not just a passing novelty item, I'll rewrite this to reflect your proof.

    3. Gold weight is in Troy ounce , correct me if I’m wrong, but there are 31.1 grams in a Troy ounce?
Although I would not buy for investment, if there is any pure gold content? And the spot prices go up? Commonsense says the value of your purchase should also? The real question is?
If the gold is real, or just a pretty color?
That’s just my opinion? Your welcome to yours! You know what they say about opinions? They are like buttholes? Everyone has one!

    7. Nice of you to warn people. These are a complete novelty and if you want to give them to someone as a gift or like collecting things that look cool then more power to you as far as ever making money off them, forget about it. The premium on a gram of gold is extremely high. The more gold you buy the better deal you get. My point is a gram bar is anywhere from 80$-100$ at the moment even though the spot price is around 60$-63$. So if you think someone is out there offering anything of value as far as prescious metals go for a dollar I'm afraid you're mistaken. With gold investment you never buy tiny fractional amounts. You save up and buy a 1/4 ounce at a time minimum and that's pushing it still. A real gold investor would never buy something like a bogus .2 gram foil note from someone on the secondary market, even if gold went up to $20,000 an ounce you would have a hard time selling one of those because it's such a massed produced novelty. Sovereign coins or rounds 1/4 ounce or better and 5 gram assayed bars is about as low as you want to go to turn a profit one day because any lower and the premiums eat up your margin.

    8. Another point worth mentioning is the use of a paper currency traded for a gold foil note. Is it wiser to hold the paper currency note, or the gold foil note? The paper currency on average is worth about 3% less per year. Some years worth even less per year. Novelty or not I've now seen some of these graded. It may be conducive to buy and hold a few and see what happens.

    3. If you do the math using milligrams the way these notes are weighed you would need 32000 notes of 100 mg to make a Troy ounce these are meant to collect not get rich off a few bought at 2.00 and chances are the purity of a note is .9995 which is very good it's just easier for people to spend 2.00 at a time than the cost of gold in bulk so yes as price of gold changes so will the price of the note so it's just as much of an investment as buying an ounce of gold

    2. I just got 7 of them on wish for $3 and $3 shipping. $1,$2,$5,$10,$20,$50, and$30 and I blow glass as a hobby and need PURE gold or silver to fume the glass. Keep in mind if I put a little flake of it in the glass and hit it with the torch, if it isn't pure or if it is another alloy it would explode but pure gold will fume like motoroil/ purple. Silver will make ghost blue. I flaked some from the banknote and what do you know, gorgeous purple and no exploding glass. No there isn't a lot weightwise but it's real because I've tried fuming with every metal I can find and this for me will keep me from having to spend a lot on a pure gold coin to shave down but yep they are real

    3. You can buy these gold foil bills (bank notes) along with gold (and silver) foil playing cards (that come in matching box) on GEEK (shopping app),WISH (shopping app),ebay, amazon, and multiple other websites and shopping apps. I have several and a deck of playing cards I bought from GEEK for relatively cheap (the shipping generally cost more than the actual product i bought). I didn't buy them as "investments" though, i have a collection of ACTUAL coins and other money, and i have a collection of non monetary "collectibles", i put the bills in with the latter and the playing cards we use for just that, playing cards. I bought them just because i thought they were cool looking and the cards (as well as the bills) are waterproof and washable. If you buy these don't buy them as an investment, buy them as a fun neat looking novelty. Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts on this matter.

  12. I bought all 7 for 35$ + 5% shipping. I do NOT regret. They are collectible items, NOT a variety store currency. NO, there is NOT 1 gram 24 K gold per note, but much, much less - extra-thin foil, like those ones used to gold plate decorations. I saw in Thailand, they sale in front of the temples (5 pcs 1" x 1" for 1 $ only); while praying, they apply those extra-thin foils on the statue of Budha. Someone who collects money will understand much better the meaning of these 24 K gold plated notes. I do NOT care how much is the real price of each note, I collect them, I like them, I want them, and for sure it IS an investment as a numismatic item. Kanata

    4. Complete waste of money. The minimum you can pay at the moment for a gram of assayed gold bullion is $70-$100 and that's stupid too because you're eating your margin up with a high premium. There are no short cuts in prescious metals. You save up and buy the largest amount you can. If you can't buy atleast 1/4 ounce at a time don't expect any return on your investment. Not to mention no serious investor is going to buy such a novel and mass produced product on the secondary market.

the one certifed as real with coa are real leagle tender but only these. they come in two ways one they graded. two they have been tested to be 24k gold with coa all others i have no clue about and i would not by them unless proof they was made in usa can be made
now what is real value on the graded ones. if u find them one set selling for 22k that 6 bills in all but how many leagle tender bills are they with china flooding market fake one i dont think any one tell the diffrence, so if u looking for these make sure they 1 graded two coa to being real tender

  13. Uninformed people focus on 24k which is a sort of mental hook. It means the gold content is pure gold but it says nothing about how much gold in total you have.
Obviously this is gold leaf which is another name for very thin gold foil. Gold has the property of being able to be made extremely thin. You can go as thin as having 1000 sheets of gold leaf that in total would be the same as an ordinary sheet of paper. The value of these notes by gold weight is measured in pennies. As a interesting item that shows what you can do with gold it does have some value. A few dollars seems fair.

    1. No, the bills image is stamped onto a piece of ultra thin gold leaf then placed inside a heavy laminate. Without the heavy lamination, the gold leaf paper would fall apart in your hands, that's how thin the gold is pressed and why it has so little gold value. I have seen real $2 bills with portions plated in gold to enhance the appearance of the words or numbers on the bill, but never a fully gold plated bill

  18. These notes have only been recently introduced to buyers through many auction sites. They were originally being auctioned at about $10 each, but now typically are selling for about $4-$5 each. The COA comes from a company that shows its logo, but there's no indication on who the COA verifier is. One seller says that the note contains 6grams of precious metals. Then directly following that statement says that the item is not solid gold. It says the note originates in China and is 99.9 fine content. He is selling his gold note for $16.52.

    1. My first thought would be no, its not legal to put that on these gold bills. It may just be something no agency wants to enforce. Or it could be like the Elongated Penny Machines, technically its illegal to mutilate or deface U.S. currency. But I believe there is a special code that allows the mutilation of pennies in those Elongated Penny Machines for the purpose of making souvenirs. Maybe these gold banknotes have a similar exemption. I wish I had a better answer for you, I just don't have any legal knowledge about this.

      Delete
    2. Point of fact. It is N O T illegal to mutiate or deface U.S. currency, Only illegal to Alter Its Face Value to Profit. Your 100 dollar bill is yours to burn, rip, paint or draw on. Just don't alter to something higher and try to spend it.

    2. Ok I've been reading all the posts up until this one and have read some crazy stuff. Its not grains of gold and it does not have 3.5 grams in it. That man doing 30 yrs of his craft and he told you that WHY did you not sell it to him and go buy a bunch more and sell those to him at a discount?????? Ok I bought 1 for a dollar 15 minutes ago and did my research right after to find out what it really was and here's what I learned.

Gold leaf, sometimes called gold foil, is gold that has been beaten into a very thin sheet that averages about 0.5 microns in thickness. For comparison, copier paper is around 130 microns, and human hair around 60 microns.pricing is based on the current London price of gold, which changes daily, and by the amount of gold contained in the leaf.
The owner of the factory which makes the gold of where I got mine has been a personal friend of the seller for over 30 years. They have the benefit of being able to order directly from the factory and get additional savings based on our his relationship with the owner he claims. Those savings are then reflected in his prices. The reason a lot of those you see on eBay and auctions are also cheap is because much of the inexpensive gold leaf on the market is made in China, in small factories with poor working conditions, producing a very poor quality product. The guys I bought gold leaf is made in Thailand by a factory that strives to make the highest quality genuine gold leaf possible. Because of his connections with the factory he s able to sell high-quality gold leaf for the best price he claims. There is allot of factors to why its cheap and main reason is because its thinner than a piece of you're hair. You can buy double gold sheets and on and on different ways like white gold which is mixed with silver most the time. I could go on about other stuff I learned but this is long enough hope I helped in some ways.

    3. You also can buy gold sheets on Amazon! Tophatter is a bidding cite at 1st that I had discovered a great cite! When I discovered what gold clad meant, I just said live and learn. I had bid on a couple only because they were interesting. But I am a quick learner (not for investment purposes).Thank you for further educating me!

  32. The banknotes are pressed with gold leaf flake, gold leaf flake is mixed with other metals and has a very small amount of actual gold in it. The banknotes should not be sold as investment gold. When buying them you have to try and look at them like you would when buying baseball cards, pokemon cards and so on. What gives baseball cards value? its only paper. Its how rare they are or the player on them. Its people who give something a value.

They are very beautiful and have collector value. if you are looking for investment gold its not in these.

$500 BANK NOTE, WITH GREEN HIGH LIGHTS, COA on Listia. According to the COA it stated: 24 karat - pure gold. Looks flashy. Bid is around 4.600 points at the moment and when looking at the value of points on the dollar there, that would come out close to 60 cents. Point wise as of now 13,400 credits equal $1. Like I said, looks very good. But if there is any investment to be looked at, this wouldn't be it. Keepsake item or a gift maybe, but investment? Not hardly.

  37. Buying one.for my daughter to.go along with her $2 from the tooth fairy (she's about to lose molars). I have always given gold dollars for front teeth and $2 bills for molars (though she pretty much knows about the tooth fairy lol) this will be a neat addition. I may buy a few for my niece and nephew as well.

  39. I did some work in the 'think film deposition' category, at times we coated optics with 59 pure gold (99.999) The optics got the thin layer, nanometers...sometimes to be used as mirrors in scientific equipment or for soldering reasons. The entire inside of the vacuum chamber was
Coated in a VERY thin layer or gold. It looked like a lot of gold but the boss wouldn't let anyone waste their time scraping the gold off before sandblasting. The $0.05 worth of gold wasn't worth the hassle...just shairing flashbacks

Another you can wash it in your clothes and not worry about it getting destroyed. I also believe that it is A good idea. Maybe they did not have enough space for the e. I have bought some. And from what I have learned from other people. If you have one with numbers in sequence. Like 99999 it doubles the value. The question is where can't you spend it. We have to decide on all of the currency.I am going to buy some more. It is listed as A coin. Not A bill. That is why it reads as such. What do you aspect from the coin mint ? To me they are of great value. Do not be cheap. But also do not go bankrupt. I would say it all spends the same way.

    1. I'm sorry, but I can guarantee this is NOT real money. The gold foil 'may' contain real gold but not enough to offset what you pay for these. This is only a novelty item, fun but ultimately no monetary value. As to the '99999' you see on some bills, thru research I've found that is just the cunning way the makers make this look like authenticate .999 pure

Little that you knew that I am not rich. I am A poor person. Who made A great buy. It is the greed of other people. They either do not want to admit there fellers. You can stop saying that they are not A good buy. While you are continuing to by them. I am going to buy more. I would like to knew the value. Some are worth more than others. The ones with 999999 are worth more.

  44. I posted a reply earlier explaining everything for the most part about these but I don't see it posted. I'm posting this for transfer Jackson please stop buying them if you think it's legal tender it is not I promise. The ones on eBay even tell you they use fake bills. Look the next sentences I'm writing from a guy that makes these and here what he said. Gold leaf is a decorative material that has been used for thousands of years, and is commonly used on picture frames, in architecture, furniture, and signs. It gives a warm golden glow in low light, and is brilliant in sunlight. The torch on the Statue of Liberty is covered in 24k gold leaf, as are several state capitol domes. Illuminated manuscripts, and religious iconography also make use of gold leaf. It can be used to decorate just about any surface.

Gold leaf, sometimes called gold foil, is gold that has been beaten into a very thin sheet that averages about 0.5 microns in thickness. For comparison, copier paper is around 130 microns, and human hair around 60 microns. One ounce of 24k gold would make a coin of about 33mm in diameter (the current US $1 coin is 26.5mm), and could be flattened in to gold leaf that would cover the ceiling of 10 x 13 foot room.

Gold leaf is so thin that when holding it up to a bright light, the light can be seen through it. Blowing on a gold leaf will disturb it, and touching it with a finger will destroy it. Because of its thinness, a sheet of gold leaf rubbed between your hands will virtually disappear, leaving only a slight visible sheen.

These should only be purchased as a fun novelty... NOT for gold value of ANY AMOUNT

  46. Anyone who buys these thinking they are Currency needs to get a re-education on fact vs. fantasy. It's 100% true that the gold value is so minuscule that the polymer it's printed on is worth more than the "Gold" leaf. You can buy these all day long from China for about $1 - $2 each on eBay (If you take advantage of the "make an offer" function anyhow.). I get these to use at our monthly poker games. The guys and gals like using these shiny banknotes (Some look nicer than others, depends on the vendor) along with regular poker chips. Adds a little more flair to the game. Certainly not an investment of any kind...unless the current gold market goes up 10,000%...yeah, not likely. Enjoy them for novelty or get creative and use them for gaming purposes. I even leave ones in Geocaches around our area for fellow Geocachers to fine. But please, do not think for one second that they are "Legal Tender" of ANY KIND. They most certainly are not.

  47. Ok so i purchased a gold foil bill off TV from what i remember was government released (the bill has lady library on the front & it basically reads 10th gram pure gold leaf) i paid 10.00 plus delivery. According to the research i found that in the gold value market a 1/10th gram goes for about 8.50 give or take, so im down a few bucks but i had assumed it would be an investment to hand down to my daughter. With that in mind i started buying these gold bank notes assuming they were about the same weight with an actual value of around 8.00 according to what im starting to find out is i think i might be at a lose. I do stil believe my purchase over the TV may be real & holds the value i stated but i could be wrong & starting to be disappointed. I am seeing them much cheaper on ebay then what i been paying. I figured if i could keep under 8.00 im good, guessing very bad choices on gold foil notes.

    1. I've never seen the bills that are sold on TV so I can't really say whether that was a good investment or not. My only real experience is with the gold banknotes sold on eBay and Amazon. Type this exactly in the eBay search bar, with the all categories filter: 10pc gold banknotes

You'll see that from China you can get 10 banknotes for roughly $2-$4. I've also found that US sellers will buy these and resell individually for several dollars each. As a cute novelty to put in a greeting card or something fun/shiny to collect these are great. As an investment I personally stay away from these.

    1. Interesting way of checking gold purity, but I would NOT recommend anyone do this. Why buy something just to destroy it. Also and more importantly, burning the plastic lamination off would cause fumes and smoke that are very hazardous to your health.

  56. I have a little light to shine. Common gold leaf is .000001" in thickness. Now if you have a sheet which is 5"x5" the weight of that single sheet is .0079 of a gram. These bills are using 2 sheets at 2.6"x 6.1" pressed onto a plastic sheet with the bill design, if they're same as US bill specs. So in reality these bills have .0101 grams of gold leaf per bill. So you'll need at least 100 of these bills to get a single gram of gold leaf. Only reason I know this, I use gold leaf for custom paint and designs on cars.

  57. Believe it or not, it is pure gold done in a layer so thin that a gram of gold could do 50 square ft. The process is called vacuum vapor deposition. So, if you figure, with one square ft we can coat 4 bills. So at $50 a gram, one bill will contain $.250 in gold. Then at $2.00 a bill is a good price..!

  58. With respect to the current topic, what about these so-called genuine us currency being sold for a fraction of the price on ebay? I say its a scam but my bonehead husband thinks he just bought $1500 worth of $5 uncirculated bills for only $24? Isnt that illegal? I told him that theres no way anyone is going to SELL you real money that they could have used themselves, much less at pennies-on-the-dollar prices. Am I right?

    1. without knowing exactly what was bought, I can't say... however it's possible that he bought 'movie prop money' which is made to look very similar to real currency. It's sold all over eBay and other auction sites. Legally don't know, I suspect it depends on location, I've found that many things that are legal can easily become illegal depending on location and/or use. Have the bills checked at a coin shop.... they can tell you if they're real or 'prop' money

  62. Craig Meyers is right! I saw a picture of a coin that's description said it was a 2014 1/20 oz Chinese gold panda 50 Yaun (coin) 9999.9999 Fine Gold BU Mint sealed. For $1.99. I paid $200.00 for this coin. When it arrived. It wasn't. It was a 2014 1/10 oz Chinese gold panda 50 yaun .999. So I went back to eBay to make notify this company that they had sent me the wrong coin. And they swore it was the same one from that picture. And should be worth no less than $1,500.00. So I went to look back at my order and they had changed its picture to the one I had received. I went to try and contact eBay customer service. And it was just a bunch of stupid choices, with no real way to contact a customer service. I've recently sent this thing to an Appraiser. So yeah. Buy from a reputable gold Dealer. eBay sucks.

Sad news is my buddy wants to buy it from me for what I paid for it to put in his 9 year olds coin collection... I have to tell him the truth about what I have learned since buying it. Oh well, if I end up with it? I will frame it with some made up serial number and use it to tell a story? OMFG This thing sure is Perty, though... lmao. Peace. 🤮

  68. The nature of gold is that it can be pressed very very thinly. To be described as "gold plated" there must be at least 12mg of gold per square inch. I was always led to believe that it was illegal to reproduce images of banknotes. Anyway, I bought a few of these at a house clearance auction and will collect them tomorrow.

  69. I just wanted to post my experience. I have the Excelsior Collection 24k gold foil and .999 silver plated Antigua $100 "legal tender" Pirate Ship collection. Got it when I was in high school for about $38 per note each month. It came with a display binder and I got a framed pirate ship print. The picture is nice. However, I took the "money" to a pawn shop which used some kind of analyzer that showed no gold or silver... it found other metals but nothing of value so they didn't make an offer. I was hoping for the metal value. If they truly are legal tender in Antigua, then a bank should be able to exchange at the conversion rate ($37USD to $100XCD). But with so many selling for so cheap, I doubt they're considered real money. As everyone else is saying, just a shiny novelty.
